How To Use Light When Decorating Your Home

When it comes to interior design, most people don’t think too much about lighting beyond the brightness and look of our light fittings. But lighting is an extremely important feature of a practical and stylish home.

There are a number of ways to define your spaces with lighting, depending on the atmosphere you want to create and the way you use the space, you can bring a totally new feeling to your home with light.

Embrace Smart Lighting

More and more people are adopting smart home technology as part of their everyday lives. It’s now easy to control your alarms, CCTV cameras, central heating system, and your lighting all from your smart speakers or mobile phone.

Smart lighting is a great way to set the schedule for your lights (which is great for security) as well as turn brightness up and down and even change color. You can find these kinds of smart bulbs online and from retailers who stock a range suitable for most smart speaker systems.

Use Downlighters For Highlighting Features

If you want to show off a great piece of furniture, artwork, or another design element in your home, then downlighters are great for this. They draw attention to the area you want but not in a stage spotlight kind of way.

Don’t try and use downlights to light large areas of your home. They aren’t great for this purpose and you’ll create uneven areas of light that can be too harsh. For living areas, have a number of light sources you can use to create the effect your need and in practical areas such as hallways and utilities, go for stronger overhead lighting.

Create Flattering Bathroom Lighting

The type and location of light in your bathroom are tricky things to get right. You want the area to be well lit for safety purposes, but bathroom lights are often very unflattering, showing up even the slightest imperfection.

Choose warmer shades of light, or add lighting to the walls and ceiling. Try and avoid a strong light directly overhead when you’re standing in from of the mirror.

Create Zones In Open-Plan Living Spaces

If you’re living in an open-plan home, it’s tempting to try and find lighting strong enough to light the entire space. Even if you could do this, you don’t want to feel like you’re living in a mall. Instead, create zones within the area, and treat each zone differently, thinking exactly what it’s going to be used for. For example, in the kitchen area, you want a light suitable to do tasks by, whereas in the living room, you want to create a softer lighting scheme.

Takeaways

Don’t leave lighting as an afterthought when you’re designing your home, it can make a world of difference to how you use your space and the atmosphere you create. There are so many styles and types of lights that you’ll be able to find the perfecting lights and lamps to go with any style.
