The Chinese art of Feng Shui is based on the concept of energy flow and the ways you can balance this to create harmony in your home, through where you place your furniture and some choices you make.
Lighting is key
Light is believed to be the strongest manifestation of energy and as such, it’s one of the most important things you can do to balance your chi energy. If your home is too dark, it will have too much yin energy, and although natural light is best, just utilising lamps in the right places can make a huge difference. So get those E14 bulbs into some floor lamps and light up those dark corners.
The front door
Your front door is the portal for energy to enter your home, so it is incredibly important to be able to let it in. One big issue is if it is covered with clutter and dust. Bags and coats are often piled up in this area and this will disrupt the energy entering. Look for a way to store the things you need by the door and keep things light and open. Look after your front door by making sure it is easily opened with no squeaking hinges, and polish the hardware as needed. You are looking after the entrance to energy after all.

Slow the flow
That said, you do have to be careful that things aren’t too open between your front and back doors. If there is a direct path between your front and back doors, the chi will flow too fast and go straight out the back door. You can slow this down by adding a patterned rug or a round coffee table by the entrance to help disperse the energy.
Clear the clutter
This is one step where you will notice the difference almost immediately. Get rid of your clutter and notice how much lighter you feel, and how much happier your home seems. It is a task that may take some time but will be more than worth it in the long run.
Don’t let your money get flushed away
This is one thing you can implement today. In Chinese culture, water is wealth, and the fundamentals of Feng Shui mean that if your bathroom door is open and your toilet seat lid is up, any wealth in your life will be coming into the house and then being flushed away into the drains immediately. Ensure that your bathroom door is always closed and the lid is down, and watch wealth flow freely into your life.
The idea of Feng Shui is to balance and find harmony between elements and energy and the idea that this can have an impact on our mental health, as well as our physical health, and even our relationships. It’s an ancient art form that is highly respected and can be practised in the west if we follow the principles.
